Ahhh… the days are still sunny, but the nights are cool and cuddly. It’s the time of year where we appreciate the outdoors and the sunlight, it’s not too hot and the fashions are awesome!
Welcome to my first makeup tutorial, Early Autumn… for your eyes!
I’m a fan of simplicity. This tutorial uses only a few things:
- 2 eyeshadow colours
- 1 eyeliner
- 1 mascara
- 1 brush
Sounds easy, no? Let’s begin!
Apply Eyeliner
Apply a thin line of eyeliner to the top lid only!!! Don’t be too extreme with your end, a small flick to make it interesting works fine. I am using a black liquid eyeliner (I know looks grey-ish because of the flash).
I prefer liner with a felt tip brush. The brush is stiffer so you don’t have to worry about it changing shape in the middle of your application.
Need help doing liner? I will post a tutorial on how I do my liquid liner later.^_^V
Apply all-over eyeshadow
As you can see I am using a very light shimmery lavender colour. It is quite light, but because it is somewhat tinted it is much less harsh than white and more suitable for just a slight brightness.
Don’t apply it all-over quite yet. I am only applying up to the crease.
This may also help give you an idea of where I stopped with my shadow. The dark purple line indicates where I stopped my application, and also where my crease is.
So why are we stopping here? This style is supposed to be soft, not crazy noticeable. Therefore, the intense eyeshadow application is reserved for the lid that is below the crease only. From the crease up to the brow bone, I will blend the colour from the lower lid upwards. This means that I am not coating my brush with any new shadow, I am only using it to pull up some of what is on my lid already.
Notice how high I’ve gone with blending only? No need for extra shadow!
Here is a side by side comparison so that you can see the difference that blending upwards made!
Apply definition shadow
My definition shadow is a beautiful grey-ish purple colour.
You will be applying this shadow into the crease. Make sure that your brush is coated well!
When I am applying shadow I keep the eye that I am working on partially open by tilting my head back. Since my lights are above the mirror, I find this helps illuminate my lids better and I am able to use both eyes to see what I am doing.
Go right into the outer corner of your eyelid with the definition shadow. Don’t be afraid to push on your crease, as long as you aren’t ramming the brush into your eye, it doesn’t hurt one bit!
Using a windshield wiping motion to apply the definition shadow into the crease. Make sure that you don’t go too far into the inner eyelid with your dark shadow or you will darken your eyes too much. Use your iris as a marker like I am.
Apply some extra definition shadow into the corner of your eyes if you desire. It will give you a slightly smokey effect. The more you apply, the darker it will become and the more the effect.
Here is an image of the end result. At this time, clean up any shadow that has fallen onto your cheeks (fallout). Note how much darker my outer corner is compare to the crease, even though I used the same colour shadow.
Another picture after eyeshadow application.
Apply Mascara
Use your favourite mascara to accent your lashes. I try not to advertise brands too heavily here, but I absolutely love this one! It truly does make your eyelashes look longer, and my eyelashes have also naturally grown longer since I’ve been using it. I swear by it and I’m not even being paid to!
Need proof?
Before
After (application to upper and lower).
I did my best to keep the angle the same. As you can see, my lashes look like they are nearly touching my eyebrow!
Show the world!
Now it’s time for you to go out and show everybody the great job you did! Your eyes should look brighter and more defined, I like to call it urban chic! This is definitely a wearable style for work.

Bad shot, it was so bright out.
Any questions?
Feel free to ask me any questions or tell me anything that you have trouble understanding. Since this is the first tutorial, I would love constructive criticism!
